CEMETERIES

Cemetery records are not of much help in Native American genealogical research. Many Indian graves are unmarked; and many of those which are marked have only plain white crosses - no names or dates. Church and sexton records, if those can be found, often have only a name and burial date, no ages, no relationships, etc. Still no source should be overlooked that might add to the family history.

While Indians can be buried in any cemetery, the following are listed as being Indian Cemeteries in MICHIGAN CEMETERY SOURCE BOOK published by the Library of Michigan.

Alger County - Grand Island Township - Section 14

Allegan County - Cheshire Township - Section 20, 44th Street, Bloomingdale. Published in Cemetery Inscriptions, Allegan County, Michigan, vol. 3, by Ruth Robbins Monteith. Also at Allegan County - Indian Cemetery

Van Buren County - Hartford - there is an Indian cemetary which was for Potowatomi Indians and pow wows are still held here. Many stones and the outline of the old Indian church are still visable.
